2011

It is finally time for a HIATUS (break) after the busy first semester of the school year!  After completing what might have seemed an INSURMOUNTABLE (not capable of being overcome) mountain of essays, projects, labs, and exams, you are free.  Even if the RESPITE (temporary interval of rest) is EPHEMERAL (fleeting), enjoy it!  Briefly, you will no longer be BELEAGUERED (besieged) by the DESPOTS (rulers with unlimited power) who have been denying you an IDYLLIC (carefree) existence.

Well, that last sentence might be a bit HISTRIONIC (excessively dramatic), but you might have been feeling just a bit RECALCITRANT (resistant to demands) recently.  Still, we hope you are leaving for the break feeling SANGUINE (optimistic) about your semester results.

What EUPHORIA (bliss) to sleep in later and to choose from an ECLECTIC (from a variety of sources) menu of various and SUNDRY (miscellaneous) activities!  We hope too that your vacation will be filled with more ALTRUISM (unselfish concern for others) than HEDONISM (devotion to pleasure). While there may be things that you COVET (desire strongly), it is also a time for being MAGNANIMOUS (generous).  Bestowing LARGESSE (gifts) upon others rather than COVETING for yourself may bring the truest pleasure of the season.  PHILANTHROPY (acting charitably) is a good ANTIDOTE (remedy) for stress.

Perhaps you’ll also take some time to have some fun AUGMENTING (increasing) your vocabulary with the Direct Hits vocabulary books!  A few words at a time will add up to a PRODIGIOUS (huge) collection of words at your command!

Then return to school, INTREPID (fearless), rested, and ready to meet the MYRIAD (numerous) challenges of the new year with EQUANIMITY (composure) and APLOMB (self-assurance).  Refreshed by the time off and UNDAUNTED (undismayed) by what lies ahead, you may find your courses EDIFYING (instructive) and ENLIGHTENING (illuminating) rather than INSCRUTABLE (baffling) and ABSTRUSE (hard to understand)!
